Yudaganawa is a compensation for Mahavehera's grief
Yudaganawa Rajamaha Vehera (1153 - 1186 AD) is the historical legacy of the Uva Province.
King Dutugemunu gathered his army in the south and went north through Buttala in Moneragala. Buttala got its name because at that time there was a large dansala which regularly supplied rice to the Sinhala army. According to legends, the rice later became Buttala.
The Sinhala army ate the rice from Buttala and then rested in the area about 1 mile from Buttala.
According to the present Monaragala Yudaganawa, the Chief Incumbent of the ancient Rajamaha Viharaya, Karmavagacharya of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Royal Panditha, the Master of Arts, Ven.
The Yudaganawa Dagoba holds a special place among the great dagobas in our motherland. From Buttala town on the Monaragala-Wellawaya main road in the Monaragala district of the Uva province. This dagoba is built at a distance of about 2 km. This is the largest stupa in the Uva area.
Yudhagana Dagaba is a sacred monument built due to a unique phenomenon in the annals of history. That is why this is a specialty among Sri Lankan stupas.
In our history, Yudaganawa can be identified as a battlefield as well as a campground for warlords. Uva Wellassa Yudaganawa, which was a training center for war heroes for the security of the Sinhala state, can be identified as a place that played a significant role in the history of war.
It is said that Yudaganawa was one of the turning points in my triumphant journey to fight King Dutugemunu with Elara. It was from here that the Philippine Sinhala army needed supplies for the battle. It is also stated that Uva Wellassa Yudaganawa and Mahiyanganaya were selected as the two main camps during that historic battle.
Therefore, Dutugemunu was one of the brave warriors who contributed to the great liberation struggle waged by Dutugemunu for the unification of the country. It is on this battlefield that Dutugemunu the Great, who bravely fought for the unity of the state as well as for the survival of the pure Buddha Sasana in a unique unitary state, faces another dilemma on this battlefield.
‘It is a well known historical fact that there was a war between the Dutugemunu and Saddhatissa brothers at the Buttala Chulangani ground in Uva Wellassa (2nd century BC). King Dutugemunu built a huge dagoba near the Chulangani ground to alleviate the grief caused by the war with his brother and to commemorate the battle forever. It can be accepted from historical facts that it is a war dagoba.

The internal turmoil of this family is due to the problematic background of monarchy that arose after the death of King Kavantissa Piya. After the death of his father, Prince Saddhatissa fled to Digamadul with his mother as well as Goddess Viharamaha, the great mother of the nation, and the mahout who could be proud of the battles.
Although Prince Dutugemunu sent several letters to his brother asking him to send his mother and the mahout to Magama for the blessings and great power of the great liberation struggle to unite the country and the nation, this futile brotherly battle arose because he did not obey. Later, with the intervention of the Maha Sangha, the guardian deities of the nation, the two brothers were reconciled and this tragic battle was resolved.

I worship the Thuparaja of Yudagana Vehera, the Nirvana healer made by King Saddhatissa.
The pilgrimage stanza of this Yudagana Chaitya was composed by the Royal Panditha Kekunawela Sri Piyarathana Anuna Thero.
The total height of the present Yudagana Stupa is 26 meters. Cm. 40. The circumference is 1038 feet. Is about 6 inches.
The dagoba built by King Saddhatissa was secondly improved by King Parakramabahu the Great (1153 - 1186 AD). Among the historical Sannas, a special Sannasa includes a pooja performed by King Rajadhirajasinghe (1781 - 1798 AD) at Yudagana Vehera de Sannasa and a description of the lands and paddy fields offered by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe (1798 - 1815).
Renovation work on the Yudagana Chaitya, which later fell into disrepair, began in 1979. It collapsed and was reopened for a second time in 1992.
According to the chronicles, King Dutugemunu summoned his only younger brother to Anuradhapura to complete the work on the dagoba, which was built by Prince Saddhatissa as a ransom to alleviate the grief caused by a futile war that challenged the brotherhood.
As you can see from the photo, the work of confirming this great stupa, which Prince Saddhatissa was unable to complete, has not been completed to this day. Although it is disturbing, it does not seem to be an obstacle to reverence as well as worship.
